- Vacuum regularly: Vacuum carpets at least once a
week, whether they look dirty or not. About 80% of
dirt in carpets is loose and should be removed quickly,
before it becomes absorbed into the fibres. Vacuum high-traffic
areas more often, as needed.
- Dust your floor: Use a treated dust mop once a week to remove fine
dirt and sand from wood floors and marble. These small particles get
ground into hard surfaces and can cause irreparable damage.
- Respond to spots immediately: Spot-clean
smudges and spills on upholstery as soon as
they occur, using a soft cloth with a small amount of
mild detergent. Once a spill dries, it can be extremely difficult or impossible to remove.
- Deal with flooding quickly: If the spring thaw causes flooding inside your house, don’t delay in calling in professional help, as damage from the water and bacteria growth can begin within hours. Use fans to circulate the air and aid drying, turn up the heat (or turn on the air conditioning) and use a dehumidifier if you have one.
